Besides the time when Austin's 4 months old in LA and borrowed his cousin's Ninja Turtle shell as a costume, this is his first Halloween! Austin is a firefighter and mamma is a black cat! Meow...

There's a big party at school! Besides the kids and the parents in costumes, there are games, food, and of course, trick-or-treating!

Halloween Goodies

Besides having brunch with YeYe & NaiNai, spending a few hours at Sogo PageOne Bookstore, and paying our routine visiting to Austin's other grandparents', mamma's been busy making Halloween goodies for Austin's class all weekend.

For the girls... pumpkin hair clips, and for the boys... ghost magnet badges...

Austin loves the hair clip so much that he wants to wear it to school! Maybe on Halloween, Austin could be the firefighter with a pumpkin hair clip!

Pretend Car Accident

Austin's been playing pretend all weekend, pretending that he's in a car accident. The boy would first unscrew his vehicle (but still in one piece), ride on it briefly, then fall off it and roll on the ground. Of course the car falls apart and he fixes it and put it back together after he gets up from the floor! He plays it over and over again...

Gets up and fixes his car...

Maybe he's been watching too much ESPN car racing!

What? A Cavity?

Mamma took Austin to get his dental check-up after school, and have his flu-shot while he's at it!

The dentist assistant noticed a few black spots on his teeth so requested a few x-rays! Austin was horrified and whined and cried! The dentist then looked at the x-rays and informed mamma that the boy has a cavity! "What? A cavity???" Mamma couldn't believe it! She cleans his teeth so well! What happened?

The dentist has a very busy schedule, and mamma could only fit in at the end of November to have his cavity filled and teeth cleaned. The dentist also suggested to have the ridges on his wisdom teeth filled to prevent future cavities and the entire session will take about 20 minutes. "What? 20 minutes?? The boy couldn't even sit without crying for 5 minutes. 20 minutes is mission impossible!" mamma warned the dentist. "We'll find a way to deal with him. You might have to leave the room!" the dentist replied. What does that mean? Are they going to use some kind of secret weapon? Or are they just going to wack him unconscious? Mamma is now really worried!

Anyway, after the dentist visit, the flu-shot didn't seem to worry him anymore. He cried a few seconds when the needle was in his arm. And that was it! Piece of cake! Getting his shot has never been so easy!

Secret Hideout

One of the few places which Austin likes to eat is KFC. But mamma only takes him there once in a while because it's not too healthy eating there too often! And since Austin doesn't like crowded places, we could usually find peace and quiet on the second floor, our secret hideout! There's also a little indoor playground on the second floor but Austin never played there!

One day, we met a little girl there and she was so happy to see us that she sat with us and asked Austin to play with her... because she thought Austin was a girl! She kept asking Austin to hurry up so they could play together but he wouldn't even give her a second look! Mamma felt so embarrassed that she had to talk to the her to make up for Austin's rudeness!

After Austin finished eating, he finally noticed her and played with her for a few minutes. Just when they got better acquainted, he wanted to go home! The girl was very disappointed and invited us to meet her there again!

The Presidential Office Building

By Austin's request (Lord knows why), mamma and daddy took him to The Presidential Office Building (he calls it 總統紀念府). It's a 20 minutes walk from our place so we decide to stroll him there!

Since we're not allowed to enter the building, there really isn't anything to see besides the architecture and the soliders standing around it. So after we walked all the way around the building, the boy requested to go train watching at the 228 Memorial Park.

We must have sat and enjoyed the two steam engines for a good 30 minutes, wasted a few coins to hear them light up and make some noise, and walked around them couple of times. After the boy had enough, we strolled him through the CKS Memorial as he slowly fell asleep, then headed on home!

It was a good walk for mamma and daddy as the entire trip took about 4 hours! Austin just enjoyed his stroller ride!

Ocean World, Yeliou

Austin's class took their field trip to Yeliou Ocean World (野柳海洋世界). Most moms tagged along!

It's about an hour bus ride. Austin snacked all the way there while looking out the window and enjoying the view...

A bus full of moms and kids...

A nice view of Yeliou shore...

And a dirty view...

After we arrives, we were immediately seated to see the show so we get good seats. There were kids from three other schools behind us.

Dolphin show...

Sea Lion show...

High dive from height equivlent to 9th floor...

Water ballet...

After the show, everyone visited the aquarium "cave" where there're lots of different fish and sea creatures. Since the cave is quite long and dark, mamma had to carry little chicken Austin through it. There is also a touch tank where the kids could actually touch the fish and sea creatures. Austin was afraid to stick his hand in. But mamma touched quite a few of them!

It was a 5 hour trip. Austin and most kids fell asleep on the bus ride back to school.

No Cold Medicine to Children Under 6

10/19/2007

"FDA panel: No cold medicines to children under 6

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Over-the-counter cold and cough medicines don't work for children under age 6, and giving the common medicine to young children cannot be recommended, a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee said Friday.

The panel of health experts, which looked at how safe and effective antihistamines, decongestants, antitussins and expectorants are in children, said it is not appropriate to take data from adults and apply it to children under 12.

After a two-day hearing, the panel called for more studies about how the medicines affect children.

Although the panel's recommendation is nonbinding, it could lead to changes in how cough and cold medicines are used. The votes are to be taken into consideration by FDA regulators, who might take action against the products at a later time.

Dr. Jeff Jenkins, of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said it could take a year or even years for the agency to make a final decision on the recommendations.

During the panel's meeting, the experts looked at a number of proposals, including whether multiple-symptom over-the-counter pediatric cough and cold medicines should be banned for children under 6 years old.

FDA experts voted 13-9 that certain cold medicines with certain ingredients should not be used by young children. The committee said medicines with the same ingredients could be used by children ages 6 to 12."

The experts voted unanimously to require that standardized dosing devices accompany all liquid medicines, in an effort to reduce the likelihood of excessive or unintentional overdosing.

Separately, the committee voted to allow marketing of multiple-symptom products to children between the ages of 2 and 12 if new research showed the products to be safe and effective. Combination products can be particularly susceptible to problems with overdosing because parents sometimes don't realize they are duplicating ingredients.

Committee members also emphasized the importance of proper and easy-to-read labels.

Dr. Daniel Rausch, director of the pediatric hospital program for New York University, said that cold medicine is effective only at doses that are too strong for young children.

Rausch recommends a more traditional treatment where dosing isn't a problem: chicken soup.

"A cold does not kill, so people should just relax," Rausch said. "Kids get sick and there's nothing that people can do about it, but they will get better."

About 800 pediatric cough and cold products are sold in the United States, many using multiple ingredients that have been marketed for use in children for some 30 years.

Earlier this year, the FDA completed a review that found that between 1969 and the fall of 2006, there were 54 reported child deaths from decongestants and 69 from antihistamines.

Most of the deaths occurred in children under 2.

In August, federal health officials recommended the "consult your physician" advice to parents on the labels of cold and cough medicines aimed at young children be replaced by a warning not to use the medications in children under 2 unless directed to do so by a health care provider.

Before the FDA hearings, some of the leading manufacturers of cold and cough medicines announced a voluntary recall of more than a dozen cold medicines for infants.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association said the products were being pulled "out of an abundance of caution."

Potential misuse of the medications, not product safety, is driving the voluntary withdrawal, the group said.

The American Academy of Pediatrics applauded last week's decision to pull those products, saying, "These medicines are ineffective and can have serious side effects. There are other ways to treat cold symptoms."

The AAP suggests:

Moisturizing the air with a vaporizer or hydrator

Using saltwater nose drops to dry up a runny nose

Using a rubber nose bulb to clear up congestion

Feeding the child chicken soup

Consulting a pediatrician
When the drug industry voluntarily withdrew products last week, it insisted that when used as directed, the drugs are safe, and they work. "Parents can continue to trust over-the-counter cough and cold remedies for their children," said Linda A. Suydam, president of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association.

"We strongly encourage parents to adhere to the recommended dosing instructions for all medicines, recognizing that the vast majority of adverse events associated with their use are due to inadvertent overdosing and misuse."

Suydam said CHPA will be launching a major educational campaign for parents and caregivers in coming months.

Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein headed the push that led to the FDA hearing. He became alarmed when four Baltimore children died after their parents gave them excessive doses of cold medicines.

Until those deaths, he did not realize that a dose of cold medicine could turn into a life-and-death issue among young children, he said."

Sick at Home!

Austin doesn't get sick often. Mamma could count his doctor visits by her fingers ever since he's born. Maybe it's because she nursed him 'til he's 3.5 year old, or maybe it's because she's extra careful with him... staying away from crowded public places... making him wash hands all the time... and changing his clothes (mamma's & daddy's clothes, too) as soon as we get home!

But... unfortunately, Austin started having a runny nose this week, then followed by a bad cough. So mamma decided to have him stay home today. Even though he's still active, mamma doesn't want him to give his cold to other kids! The boy couldn't be happier! WHY is he so happy at home and dreads about going to school everyday? Mamma recorded his activities at home and maybe figure out why...

7:00 - 8:30 Play-doh time while eating dry cereal and milk
8:30 - 10:00 build Thomas wooden tracks
10:00 - 12:00 puzzle time while watching a little TV (Bob the Builder... Noddy...)
12:00 - 2:00 lining up all his car collections
2:00 - 4:00 Lego time while watching a little more TV (Teletubbies...)
4:00 - 5:00 reading in bed
5:00 - 6:00 telling mamma stories on the couch
6:00 - 7:00 drawing while mamma feeds him two bowls of cereals
7:00 - 8:00 prepare for bedtime
8:00 - 9:00 computer time
9:00 off to bed

The boy never runs out of things to do at home. He manages to find something to keep himself busy and happy all the time! He doesn't even have time to eat!

At school, the activities changes every 30 minutes...
9:00 - 9:30 circle time
9:30 - 10:00 activity
10:00 - 10:30 snack
10:30 - 11:00 recess (play outside)
11:00 - 11:30 activity
11:30 - 12:00 activity
(Note: activity includes art, math, science, reading, writing, sensory, dramatic play, gym, library... It's different from day to day.)

School sounds fun! Mamma believes the boy doesn't like it for several reasons...
1. misses mamma
2. likes to do things alone or with just one or two others
3. has more toys at home
4. 30 minutes is too short of time to get anything done. When he finally gets around to something, it's time to do something else!

Since Austin has no choice but to go to school, he just have to accept the fact, whether he likes is or not! And the only privilege he has when he's sick is that he gets to stay home and be happy, at least!

Halloween Sneak Preview

This will be Austin's first Halloween! In the previous years, mamma just dresses him in whatever she wishes and have him parade around the house! In our neck of the woods, there is no pumpkin field to choose our pumpkins, no neighborhood to go trick-or-treating day or night, and nobody stashes goodies around to hand out to kids!

The only place we could pick our pumpkins is at a few supermarkets which cater to foreigners...

This little pumpkin is about the size of Austin's little fist. It's too small to carve so mamma drew on the face...

This year, there will be a big party at his school. So mamma let him picked out his costume on the internet in advance and thank Uncle Max and Auntie May for mailing it to Taiwan!

The boy wouldn't take the costume off! He wears it at grandma's...

He wears it until daddy comes home...

He even wears it while playing Lego with daddy...

Finally, this little firefighter takes his uniform off to take a bath before bed time!

Parent-Teacher Conference, followed by a Playdate

Austin's school held its parent-teacher conference today where the parents and teacher discuss how the child is progressing. Austin's teacher prepared some of the works that he has done in class, discussed how the boy is doing, what he has accomplished, and how he could improve. And mamma shared her views with the teacher. All's well!

After the conference, Austin had a playdate with one of his classmate. We spent most of our morning at his friend's place playing with toys in his room, had a nice home cooked pasta lunch, then went for a nice walk to the playground and spent a little time there before heading home in the mid-afternoon! Austin was so tired that he fell asleep as soon as he got on the bus!

After a 6-day vacation, we're ready to go back to school!

Where is Everybody?

Austin has 2 days off for Mid-Autumn Break! Since the weather is soooooo nice... just rained, cloudy, windy, and cool (24C/75F), mamma decided to take Austin to the library, and then stroll around the park, like the good o'days!

But where is everybody? The children's floor of the library is empty, and the playground at the park is also empty! We were at the library for a good two hours, and two more hours at the park, on a weekday afternoon. Where are all the SAHM? We couldn't believe we get the library and the Daan Forest Park's playground ALL to ourselves, for an entire afternoon! It's like a ghost town! What's going on??

Hiding behind the leave...

Swinging...

See ya later...

++ Happy Double Ten ++

It's Republic of China's National Day! Taiwan demonstrates military prowess parade for the first time in 16 years. Of course we wouldn't miss it! Since viewing the parade is by invitation only for security reasons and the streets are blocked off, we could only see the vehicles drive off after the parade!

Austin was on daddy the entire time! What a happy boy, and his mamma, too...

The police take their position before the parade...

The fighting planes, war jets, or whatever you call them...

Combat vehicles (Maybe Uncle Max could help us name some of them cuz we're clueless)...

Dump trucks???...

Made in Taiwan Missiles...

After 30 minutes of watching combat vehicles driving by and fighting the crowd, we walked to CKS Memorial to take a break...

The Golden Sander Merchandising Girls (and family) Get Together Luncheon at TGIF...

Austin fell asleep on his daddy after his mac & cheese. He's had an exciting and exhausting morning...

"I Don't Want to Die"

"Will I die, mamma?" I don't want to die!" Austin's been worried about dying for the past few days! All he knows about death is that people die when they get old, and that when people die, they turn into statues (stone people) and never come back.

It all got started when he told his grandparents that he wants to move to the States when he turns 18 (God knows why?) And when his grandparents told him that they couldn't come along because they'll be dead by then, he started to shed a few tears! (Couldn't they just say "okay!"?)

When Austin got home, he started asking mamma questions about "death"! And when mamma told him that everyone dies when they get old, he started crying again! Mamma had read some articles about explaining death to children. But he's just too sensitive of a child, crying about death a little too soon!

Bite! Bite! Bite!

Austin doesn't watch TV much anymore! It's normal that his days would go by without any TV time. But sometimes, his daddy watches the National Geographic Channel and he'll watch along. Lately, he's been exposed to programs where animals eats animals... like lions eat elephants alive, and pythons swallow small animals by the whole... (It's something that his mamma would never watch, yuck!)

His mamma also noticed that he's been biting himself on the arms and gets very excited about the teeth marks which he leaves on himself! Even his teacher asks why he bites himself and looks happy when he sees teeth marks?!

Guess as long as the teeth marks stay on himself, and not someone else, it's okay! And hope that it's just a phase and he'll get over it!

5-Star Book

Mamma volunteers at Austin's school every morning in their little library. Besides repairing damaged books and refiling them into their proper places, she gets to pick out books for Austin to read!

As of now, "You Choose" by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt is Austin's favorite book! In the book, you get to choose where to go… whom you'd like for family and friends… what kind of home to live in… what to put in it… what transportation to travel in… what to eat… what to wear… what to get for a pet… what job to get… where to go for fun… and where to sleep...

Austin likes it so much that he doesn't want to return it. So mamma had to search around and buy him a copy! It's available at MacKids (www.mackids.com.tw). They have more English children's book than Eslite, Page One (101), or any other bookstore mamma knows. They even have books which Caves Bookstore doesn't carry!

It's a fun book even for mamma and daddy! It's definitely a 5-star book!

He's Got the Whole World in His Hand

Austin made an earth out out of his play-doh and told mamma where all the countries are located... Greece, Switzerland, England, Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan, and of course, America! But since mamma didn't teach him, and he didn't learn it from school, where on earth did he pick up the information???

Secret Admirer

Mamma found a heart-shaped card in Austin's bag after school. It's from a girl in his class! How cute is that?!

As you could see, everyone in his class already knows how to write not only their own names, but other kids names, too! Writing is a very useful tool, when it comes to things like this... even at their age!
